Global Ocean Issues Tracker

Ranked, sourced findings on ocean warming, sea level, acidification, coral reefs, fisheries, plastics, pollution, shipping, offshore energy, deep-sea mining, coastal habitats, wildlife, polar seas, governance and aquaculture, across 32 regional seas and the high seas. Each finding is scored from 0 to 10 on documented evidence only.

Geography

Where the findings are

Each regional sea is shaded by its most severe active finding; glowing points are findings with coordinates. Hover for details, click a sea for its page.

Drawing the map…

Grey or untinted means no finding in this feed. It does not mean the sea has no problems. Sea outlines are approximate; findings spanning several seas shade every sea they touch. Open-ocean and global findings with no regional sea appear only in the lists and the Explorer.

Severity

Severity by category

How the active findings split by category, score, basin and month. Categories are ranked separately, never against each other.

Findings by category

Active findings per category, split by severity level. Longest bar first.

Severity distribution

Active findings at each score from 0 to 10.

Findings by ocean basin

Active findings per basin; a finding counts once, under its own basin.

What drives each score

Average of each 0–2 scoring component across a category's active findings. Darker means more severe evidence.

New findings per month

Findings by the month they were first seen, over the last 24 months.

Primary issue layer

What kind of problem each active finding mainly is.

Climate & Physical: warming, sea level, acidification, ice. Pollution: plastics, nutrients, chemicals and oil. Living Resources & Habitats: reefs, fisheries, habitats, wildlife, aquaculture. Governance & Economy: shipping, energy, mining, treaties, disputes. More

Economic risk

Risk to a fishery, a port, a coastal economy or an operator, from the cited evidence.

Trend direction

Observed direction for each active finding. Early runs have little comparable history, so many findings read as insufficient history.

Findings

Ranked findings by category

Ranked within each category by severity score, with the newer source date breaking ties. Categories are not combined into a global rank.
